When I was 14 I got a bench and set of free weights for my birthday and from there I was amazed at the progress I was making.

Background
Just 30 seconds to explain a bit about myself. I always wanted to be big since I was 10 years old but I did not start until I was about twelve when I started doing push ups, pull-ups and other basic exercises using my own body weight. When I was 14 I got a bench and set of free weights for my birthday and from there I was amazed at the progress I was making. I then got serious about 1 year ago and started trying out different training programs and learning the important nutrition side of bodybuilding. He can be contacted at johnlemare@hotmail.com.

I'm tired of all the fat Americans that won't just get off their butts and cut the fat, so so many hot girls would come from that if those fat girls that actually would look beautiful would workout.

Background
I wanted to build my body in order to feel better about myself, and also to look like I've always wanted to. I was just tired of looking in the mirror and thinking about how I could look, instead of taking control and transforming myself into what I should look like. Its never too late to start that change. John is an avid bodybuilder who won't let anything get in the way of his goals. '...I really got into it and decided that one day I would be huge.'

Background
Ever since I saw Conan and The Incredible Hulk- I wanted to be big. I have been working out since about 12, but nothing serious (mainly for sports). Then when I was about 14 I gradually started to gain interest and started reading a lot about it. Then about January of 2000 I really got into it and decided that one day I would be huge. In the first 2 months, my bench rose 15 lbs. then in the next 3 weeks, it rose 35 lbs. then...I caught a cold and shortly after that school started. my progress came to a crashing halt as I only pumped about 2 times per week (our school has an 8 hour day and plenty of homework), but I still could have tried harder. months passed, and I regret not doing everything I could to get back in the zone. But now...it's time. I am motivated more than ever and I am not going to let anything get in my way.

I don't consider myself a bodybuilder; I just like to be strong enough to lift myself and someone dangling from my feet up over the ledge of a roof!

Background
As far as I know, I started lifting in the seventh grade but I didn’t hold out very long. The problem, I’m sure, was that I was getting up early in the morning and lifting before school started. Add to that the fact that I had no concept of reps or sets and my post workout nutrition was a bottle of SOBE “Power”.
I drank “Power” because it had creatine and according to my friend it was like steroids and soon to be made illegal or something to that extent. I would store up big hordes of the stuff in my dresser drawer while keeping an eye out for the feds.
The real fitness experience didn’t happen until the summer before ninth grade when I purchased my first issue of Men’s Health magazine; that and I think I was tired of being fat. I had a simple lifting program and went running everyday. I ate rice cakes and fat free tortillas. Alas, I was still hording SOBE “Power”.
I could go on for a long time detailing all the strange things I have done in the name of fitness and if it wasn’t for two things, I would no doubt still be making sandwiches with that awful fat free mayonnaise. So, what were the two oh-so-potent guiding forces? Well, that first issue of Men’s Health with their dripping wet cover model and the day I was told about Bodybuilding.com.
I also should give some credit to Angela (teen bodybuilder #32) for reminding me to eat slower, for always being a source of competition to keep me working hard, and that damned good protein pizza she made me. These things—hard work, consistency, protein, slower eating, et cetera—are important for progress as well as keeping oneself from choking.
Eventually I learned about protein powders and vitamins and the proper way to lift weights. The day came when my rice cakes and SOBE were replaced with boxes of mac-n-cheese, cans of tuna and chili, and jars of medium salsa. Now I eat steak and eggs with homegrown veggies and mix my whey with cream and olive oil.
The first thing I ever ordered from Bodybuilding.com was 2lbs of Vanilla Praline Designer Whey, 1 container of Pro Paks, and of course I couldn’t resist buying some methoxy product made by EAS. I admit, they may not have been the smartest choices but they made me feel tough, dangerous, hard-hitting.
Because the methoxy product said “HP” on it I thought I was the big shit in my gym. I have finally realized that I am not the big shit I thought I was; consequently, I now workout at home.
I don’t actually consider myself a bodybuilder; I simply like to be strong enough to lift myself and someone dangling from my feet up over the ledge of a rooftop. I prefer to keep in optimum condition so I can focus properly when it comes time to create a mind wrenching poem, script, or story. It’s also nice to have some muscles while jamming on your Les Paul in a tank top.

One of the biggest myths about weight lifting is that it stunts your growth. No studies have ever been shown that lifting weights stunts or inhibits growth.

Background
Hi. My name is Jay Horowitz. I am a 15 year old world-record holding powerlifter, currently residing in New York. I have been lifting weights since the age of 8. My favorite bodyparts are my forearms and my shoulders, and my favorite exercise is the deadlift. Some of my hobbies aside from weight lifting are basketball and travel. My favorite bodybuilders are Ronnie Coleman and Lee Preist. I am 6' 2", and weigh 220 at 7% bf. I was exploring a hotel at the age of 8, and I came across the weight room. In it stood the biggest guy I had ever seen. I asked him how I could be like him, and he showed me 2 exercises. Everything just stemmed from there.

Background
I am actually a rower who got into bodybuilding partly to improve performance but I also started because I hated being puny. OK, I admit it I wanted attention from the ladies too! Anyway, I love bodybuilding a lot: improvement comes at whatever pace you want and you dictate everything too. I have respect for everybody as well. Whether you are a skinny hard gainer, someone who is obese and seriously needs to drop fat for health reasons, a mass monster, powerlifter, athlete, or someone like me it doesn't matter. In the year and a half that I have been training I have gone from 136 lbs to just above 200, all while keeping the abs cut. People at my gym started asking me if I was training for local contests recently and it was so cool. I have improved tremendously, and I hope I can use my writing to help others (teens up to the old folks).
I truly want to help others through the use of my writing. I am emphatic to the goals and concerns of all and I firmly believe that people who visit this website will not only accrue insight but also make a momentous improvement in their physique and consequently in their life as a whole. Aristotle once quoted when describing the ideal man as being "sound in mind and body".

How did my flat bench go up like this?
A typical progression for me on the Incline Press is something like 135 for 10, 160 for 5 then 4 work sets: 7/195, 5/200lbs, 3-4/205, 3/210
BUT YESTERDAY THE INCLINE WAS iN USE SO I DID THE FLAT BENCH PRESS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIKE 8 MONTHS...THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE....
10/135, 10/ 160 ( my warm-ups felt lighter than usual), My first work set was supposed to be with 195 but the barbell felt ridiculously light so I stopped and put 205 and thought, this will be it-- but that still was too light.
I continued this until I was at 225 lbs and got 7 text book reps and even felt like I had another 1-2reps left in me. The next set was in a power rack with the safety catches at the ready just in case. Next set was 240 lbs for 4 reps. A third set saw me doing 255 for another 4 reps. I was dumbfounded that I still had energy to complete 4 reps with a weight that was 15 lbs heavier than the last set. On my last set I thought what the hell... I was in the power rack with the safety catches and now I had 2 spotters on both sides of the bar... I ended up getting 275 x 2 reps! That was crazy! How the hell am I flat benching more than I ever did before even though I haven't touched the flat bench is more than half a year?

When I first started lifting it was to gain a little muscle and strength for swimming (I swim on my high school team and for a USA team). Then after about 1 month I realized how fun and relaxing lifting really was. So I bought a few more weights and started working out every day in my garage. Then I began to do a lot of research on nutrition, exercises, and supplements. I've been lifting (bodybuilding) since about 10/1/00. It's a way for me to relax, think about the day, sweat a little, and get tremendous satisfaction. Before I even began bodybuilding I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia so I knew quite a bit about eating good foods and a healthy diet. So I figured, that I should share all my knowledge and research with other people so I can help and enrich their lives!

Background
My name is Ian Estabrook. I am a seventeen year-old high school student from Orland Park, Illinois. When I was younger, I loved to eat. Actually, as embarrassing as it is to admit, I sometimes ate until I threw up when my family went out to dinner. Food pretty much controlled my life. However, I made a promise to myself on my sixteenth birthday that I would change my lifestyle for the better.
I began to lift weights and perform cardio regularly, and eventually I started to drop the pounds. When I started, I was a hefty 240 pounds. Now, almost a year later, I have lost 75 pounds. I now weigh in at a slim and trim 165 pounds, and I have never been happier. Now, I weight train and run regularly every week. I joined the rugby team for my high school, and I plan on competing in a bodybuilding contest in the near future. I feel like a new person, and my confidence level has gone through the roof.
Bodybuilding helped me change my entire life. I hope I am lucky enough to receive the opportunity to share my knowledge and opinions.

Denmark loves the feel of the iron in his hands and the atmosphere in the gym when everyone is working out and trying to improve their lives. He feels that you can never achieve your goals unless you just go for it...

Background
Hello, to any fans out there! My name is Denmark Harris, the author of Teens and Body Image. I live in Sacramento, California and I am a fitness enthusiast. I first began to really get into fitness when I was just fourteen years old. My dad had taken me to our local YMCA in Sacramento, California and hired a personal trainer for me. I was given lessons on how to use the numerous weight lifting machines and free weights and different weight lifting techniques and nutritional advice. I did not like working out at first but as I began to see the results I began to take an interest in the sport and before I knew it I was totally hooked.
Other hobbies and activities include spending time with friends, reading books and articles on Bodybuilding.com and playing all sports, mainly basketball. I love to see my body grow and become more defined and muscular day by day. I love the intensifying rush and adrenaline when weight lifting. I love the feel of the iron in my hands and the atmosphere in the gym when everyone is working out and trying to improve their lives. I feel that you can never achieve your goals unless you just go for it and do not let anything or anyone get in your way.
Happy lifting!

Now I have taken bodybuilding to a science almost, and I'm the strongest kid in the school at 5'4". My goal is now to win the Mr. Olympia title, and no one or thing is going to stop me, not even genetics. I started this three years ago, and I'm getting smarter by the day. Background
Hello, my name is Danny Drescher and I am a 16 year old bodybuilder from Greenville SC. After being an avid reader of a lot of bb.com articles, I have decided to try writing my own. I have been lifting for just about a year and a half, starting out to overcome an eating disorder. After reading as many articles as I could, I soon began to conquer the disorder and start packing on some mass.
During my first year of lifting, and eating right, I gained 24 pounds and was back to a healthy weight. After that I decided to take my love for bodybuilding to the next level and started looking into competitions in my area. On May 26th, I competed in my very first bodybuilding contest where I placed 2nd in both the Teen and Men's Jr. Lightweight division.
Over my 3 month contest prep, I recorded monthly my diet, workouts, and feelings about the Contest Prep. Hopefully these articles can help other teen bodybuilders meet their future goals in bodybuilding.

I learned about nutrition & training and am now applying everything I've learned to my workout life. I also like to try new programs... Now I can start giving back.

Background
I started off working out in the summer when I was 14 years old. I had a crazy trainer who pushed me to exhaustion but I found something great in it. My body started changing quickly and I began to get into it on my own. I did an enormous amount of research on Bodybuilding.com and started to get better on my own.
I learned about nutrition and training and am now applying everything I've learned to my workout life. I like to try new programs and I have a website www.metatraining.com, where I like to share everything that I learn and that I think about training and nutrition and also where I do have an online personal training program for any and all goals.
I strive to get better no matter what because I never think that I am good enough or big enough. I need to get bigger and that is my main goal. Bodybuilding helps me out with my only real bad condition, depression, and makes life a lot more livable. I would love to help anyone with similar problems to help get over them with this method.

I would suggest mixing it up every once in a while.

Background
I'm a 14-year-old male; I am currently living in a small town known as Sequim, Washington. I am 5' 9" tall, and weigh 125 lbs. When I started lifting weights about ten months ago, I was 5' 7", and weighed 110 lbs. I didn't really start pounding the weights until about two months ago, but have been lifting on and off, at my leisure, for about ten months. In this past week, as hard as it may be to believe, I have put on about 4 lbs. of weight. It is not water retention, as I actually drink much less water than I should; rather I drink milk or juice, and not too much of those either. This may have been the cause of my less than expected gains before, or it may be that
I started track and field this week in school. My gain this week is not fat, because I have looked in the mirror and I can see my six-pack is actually more defined, due to the cardio work I have been doing in track. This gain has been mainly, if not all, lean muscle mass. I have also increased my vertical by about three inches, allowing me to touch rim on a ten-foot hoop.
My routine this week has been:
    Track:
  • Run 1 lap around track
  • Run length of football field 8 times
  • 1 set ten push-ups
  • 1 set ten clap push-ups
  • 1 more set ten push-ups
  • 3 sets 10 leg lifts
  • Shotput
  • Discus
    Work Out:
  • 3 sets incline dumbbell press till failure
  • 2 sets incline bench till failure
  • 2 sets dumbbell press till failure
  • 3 sets incline bench till failure
This is all I would do, I know it's a really bad training routine, but this is not my usual routine. I like to switch it up every once in a while, and throw in a week of light work on two or three body parts, to make sure I don't hit a plateau. This particular one is mostly benching, because as you can see, I do throwing events, and benching uses many of the same muscles as the throwing events. This is most definitely not a routine I would recommend to anyone, although, I would suggest mixing it up every once in a while. Also, if you're anything like me, you play sports, such as basketball, football, and track, then you should not train too hard while playing these sports if you practice hard. This will overwork your muscles and may actually cause a decrease in size. Wait until the end of the sport to train hard, and then train with everything you've got, don't give up, push yourself as hard as possible. All right, well this is just my intro article to give you an idea of what kind of person I am.

bryan kenny

I don't know about all of you, but I'm always getting in my friends' faces and dragging them down to the gym, unless they give me a valid excuse not to come like 'I have to work.', then I'll let them go, but I make them swear they'll come next time.

Background
I started bodybuilding because my self-esteem was as low as it could possibly be through most of elementary school I was made fun of, and got the crap kicked out of me because of my weight. As soon as I got into high school I joined the football team and at first it wasn't so bad, but I found myself lagging behind and I couldn't keep up, I was way out of shape. So I quit football just in time for wrestling, I knew I could do that, because I have wrestled since grade 7. In August 2000 I began my training, at that time my workouts consisted mostly of running, jogging on the spot, crunches and push-ups, I really only wanted to be ready for football so I could keep up. But we ended up not having sports this year at school, so I began reading about bodybuilding, and its become a new way of life for me. I started at a weight of 246 and as of today (January 20, 2001) I weigh 207 and looking better than ever. So if I may I'd like to take a second to thank all those people who made my life a living hell, (yes thank them) for making me what I am today and what I will be tomorrow. And when the time comes to unveil the masterpiece that is me, I'm gonna laugh my ass off because they will probably be as scrawny as ever, more than likely because of smoking. But hey that's their problem not mine.

Background
I started weight training for sports in high school. By watching my genetics go to work on my physique I quickly became addicted to improving my size and symmetry. This has affected many aspects of my life from bodybuilding to moto-cross racing.
By maximizing my nutrition and keeping a strict workout regimen I believe I can continue my winning streak and add to my trophy collection.
I am looking forward to working with Bodybuilding.com while they follow me through my grueling contest preperation.
